Kindled Program

KINDLED NATURE SCHOOL
In this monthly Saturday nature-connection program, you will join three age groups and their Nature Mentors. Build forts for your group’s campsite, sneak up on critters of all kinds, go on sleep-outs, learn
to build bows and arrows. We’ll learn through playing games, hearing stories, watching mentors, and getting our knees dirty while finding out how things work out here in the wilderness.

THREE AGE GROUPS

Ages 6-9, 10-12, 13-16
There are many stages in life. People and kids get excited about different things at different ages. Though we can all enjoy stories from mentors or a big game of tag, different tasks are more appropriate for some ages than for others. Also whereas the youngest group might want to explore and make up nature stories all day, the 13-16 year olds would rather talk around the fire, shoot bows and play all night capture the flag.
For the 6 to 9 year olds a typical day might be full of magic and adventure, wandering through the forest looking for bugs and amphibians.
For the 10-12 year olds, it might include testing edges with games, challenges, and learning: making really big forts, finding out how to cook over the fire, learning about making fire with the bow drill instead of matches, or getting camouflaged.
For the 13-16 year olds, a typical day might include testing your skills and finding out who you want to be. Mentors will be there for in-depth questions (and to make up crazy fun games).

Each camp is different and has a Nature Mentor that will complement that and help each Nature Schooler into the next stage of their journey in nature and life.

Nature Mentoring
Kindled Nature Program practices Nature Mentoring, a model that represents the heart of Willowell’s mission to connect people with the arts, education, the environment, and each other.  It’s a pretty simple model, but why does it work?  Learn more about the science and research behind Nature Mentoring at the website of 8 Shields Institute.
